Swiss court orders co-pilot of hijacked Ethiopian plane held in custody

A Swiss court has ordered the co-pilot of a hijacked Ethiopian Airlines plane held in custody pending further investigation and appointed him a defence counsel. The man, who has previously been identified as 31-year-old Ethiopian Hailemedhin Abera, is accused of hijacking the Rome-bound plane and forcing it to land in Geneva on Monday. None of the 200 passengers and crew members were injured in the incident. Swiss federal prosecutors said in a statement Thursday that investigators are trying to get "a complete picture of the events during the plane hijacking" but didn't provide further details. Prosecutors also said the plane was released to Ethiopian Airlines on Wednesday.  Source ( CTV News)

Co-pilot hijacked the plane when the pilot went to the bathroom.

Swiss police have arrested the co-pilot of an Ethiopian Airlines flight after he allegedly hijacked the plane and forced it to land in Geneva on Monday.Geneva airport spokesman Bertrand Staempfli said the co-pilot had explained how he had seized his chance when the pilot went to the bathroom. "He said he felt threatened in his country and wants to seek asylum in Switzerland." The man, born in 1983 and an Ethiopian citizen, had contacted Geneva airport and said "he needed to land to fill the tank. After that he announced the hijacking," Staempfli said. "At 6.02 am, the plane landed safely." The co-pilot left the plane by scaling down a rope he had thrown out of the cockpit window. "He didn’t have a weapon with him," he said, adding that the hijacker would go before a judge later on Monday. Technically, he could be charged with "hostage-taking" and could face up to 20 years in prison, Staempfli said. The flight from Addis Ababa to Rome was hijacked over Africa and landed at Geneva airport about 4pm Sydney time. The airport was closed after the flight landed.  Police spokesman Jean-Philippe Brandt told AP that "the situation is under control" and nobody on the flight was injured. The plane was parked at a far end of a runway crowded with police and other emergency vehicles on Monday morning, Swiss time, with passengers filing out with their arms up in the air before getting onto waiting buses, according to an AFP reporter at the scene. The ATS news agency said the flight was carrying about 200 people and was hijacked as it flew over Sudan. Ethiopia said it was investigating who hijacked the Boeing 767. ‘‘Our ambassador there [in Geneva] is trying to search information from our passengers," Information Minister Redwan Hussein said.
All flights to and from the Geneva airport early Monday were either diverted or cancelled. The airport was gradually reopening, with landings starting up again at 8am (6pm Sydney time) and takeoffs scheduled to begin at 8.45am, according to a spokesman. Online flight watchers reported picking up a "Squawk 7500" hijack radio code coming from Ethiopian Airlines flight ET702 about 3.30pm, Sydney time. The Boeing 767's bizarre flight pattern was plotted live online on flightradar24.com. The site showed the plane making multiple circles around the airport before finally landing.
Cairo airport officials said the pilot of the plane informed the control tower at Abu Simbel in southern Egypt that his plane had been hijacked. The pilot did not ask to land in Egypt and the plane headed for Libyan airspace, they said. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorised to brief the media.

Ethiopia PM warns Egypt against taking dam file to UNSC-UPDATED

Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn said Wednesday that Egypt would be on the losing side if it referred the issue of Ethiopia's multibillion-dollar hydroelectric dam project to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).
"We're ready for this and will win politically," Desalegntold local reporters on Wednesday.
He went on to describe as "useless" Egyptian plans to take the Ethiopian dam file to the UNSC. The Ethiopian prime minister added that work on the dam was proceeding on schedule despite stalled negotiations between Ethiopia, Sudan and Egypt, which Desalegn attributed to Egyptian "intransigence." Relations between Ethiopia and Egypt have soured over Ethiopia's plans to build its Grand Renaissance Dam on the Blue Nile, which represents Egypt's main source of water. The controversial project has raised alarm bells in Egypt, the Arab world's most populous country, regarding its traditional share of Nile water.
Water distribution among Nile basin states has long been based on a colonial-era agreement granting Egypt and Sudan the lion's share of the river's water.  Source  (World Bulletin / News Desk)

Ethiopia Football Federation fires Coach Sewnet Bishaw

The Ethiopia Football Federation has sacked head coach Sewnet Bishaw after a disastrous performance at the recent African Nations Championship in South Africa. Ethiopia lost all three of their group games at the tournament for locally-based players and failed to score a single goal. The EFF president Junedin Basha told BBC Sport that the national team's recent results do not match the nation's current image. "Sewnet is a hero for our football; he brought us back to the international scene, we recognise his success in the last two years but things must continue to grow," he said. "They don't need to stay stuck somewhere." Bishaw led Ethiopia to a first Africa Cup of Nations in 31 years when they qualified for the finals in South Africa last year. Under his guidance the team also did well in the 2014 World Cup qualifiers as they reached the play-offs, losing 4-1 on aggregate to Nigeria for a place in Brazil. But results in recent months have cost Bishaw his job. "We lost both of the World Cup play-off mathces, we didn't do well at the regional Cecafa Cup and the CHAN results were less of our expectations, they don't fit a nation of 90 million people, " Basha added. The EFF are yet to name a replacement for Bishaw but there is a chance they could look at hiring a foreign coach for the Walya Antelopes. "We'll be looking for a good coach that can push us up to the next level and that could mean a foreign coach taking the post but local coaches are also being considered - what we need is some-one who can improve us," Basha insisted.  Source  ( BBC)
