Ethiopian Women were given steralization injection before they get to Israel, says report

According to the report, the women were given the Depo Provera injections in the family planning workshops in transit camps, a practice that continued once they reached Israel. The women who were interviewed for the investigation reported that they were told at the transit camps that having many children would make their lives more difficult in Ethiopia and in Israel, and even that they would be barred from coming to Israel if they refused.

Is Haile Gebrselassie's Marathon Career Over?

Gebrselassie is a former world record holder with a best of 2:03:59 but his most recent marathon performance was a fourth-place 2:08:47 in February. As David Monti of Race Results Weekly pointed out yesterday, Gebrselassie’s last five marathons have consisted of dropping out three times, that 2:08 earlier this year and one withdrawal before race day. Officially, the Ethiopian turns 40 in April, though there are suspicions he’s considerably older. He made a pre-race statement that he was capable of 2:05 or 2:06 in Fukuoka if the conditions were right, but perhaps it was his condition that wasn’t. He dropped out after 32-K on Sunday, and later tweeted, “I could not lift my left leg properly anymore and I had to stop. My training went well and I had no indication of this.” He added,  Read more..

Despite Fast Growth, Ethiopia Still Plagued by Poverty

Ethiopia's economy has grown at an annual rate of nearly 10 percent for the last seven years. But a third of the population still lives below the poverty line. Samuel Bwalya is the economic advisor for the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in Ethiopia. Bwalya says that the country has to be patient while waiting for a trickle-down effect to lift more people from poverty: "Ethiopia is starting from a very low base in terms of development, so it should actually take much longer for this impact to take root," Bwalya noted. "So I think we are too much in a hurry to see seven-year growth to start asking questions about how many people are out of poverty.  Read more...

DV lottery is cancelled and diverted to high –tech foreign born immigrants

“We want to put to the head of the line the people who, every single one of them that comes, net creates jobs,” said Rep. Darrell Issa, California Republican, who managed the bill on the House floor. Democrats, though, objected to making immigration a zero-sum equation, where any new visas would have to come at the expense of existing lines of immigration.“I can’t support a bill that pits immigrant communities against each other,” said Rep. Zoe Lofgren, the ranking Democrat on the House immigration subcommittee.  Read more...

Ethiopian team would not travel to the Red Sea state, say EFF

The request comes as the neighboring countries continue to dispute borders. The teams are set to play in the Eritrean capital, Asmara, between 14-16 January with the return tie in Addis Ababa set for two weeks later. But Ethiopia said they would not travel to the Red Sea state. "We want the matches to take place, but we're not willing to travel there and it is obvious their government won't allow their team to visit Addis Ababa," said Ethiopian Football Federation spokesman Melaku Ayele. "So we've proposed an alternative venue, neighbouring Sudan, for both matches to be held in." Ethiopia and Eritrea fought a border war between 1998-2000 that killed tens of thousands of troops. A Hague-based independent border commission ruled that the flashpoint town of Badme belonged to Eritrea but the village remains in the hands of Ethiopia and the spat remains unresolved. Asmara is yet to respond to Ethiopia's request, Melaku said. The African Nations Championship, played every two years, is the continent's second biggest tournament in which only domestic-based players can take part. Ethiopia, nicknamed the Walyas, recently sealed a spot at the more glamorous Africa Cup of Nations finals set for January after a three-decade absence. Ethiopia and Eritrea were last pitched against each other in 1998 in a qualifying round for the 2000 African Nations Cup, just months after fighting broke out along their sun-blasted border. Ethiopia declined to take part in those matches. Source ( BBC)

Uganda beat Ethiopia to reach Cecafa Cup quarter-finals

Uganda Cranes became the first nation to qualify for the 2012 Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup after a 1-0 triumph over Ethiopia . The defending champions and hosts of the tournament scored early through Brian Umony in the ninth minute. A heavy afternoon downpour made for a wet surface and difficult conditions but Uganda played with a lot of purpose to pin the Ethiopians back for long spells of the match. Fikru Teferra Lemessa, the only player who featured prominently for the senior team that qualified for the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations, gave a captain's performance for Ethiopia but was kept in check well by the Cranes.

"We are happy to make it to the quarters, but we need to win the last group game against South Sudan first," said team skipper Hassan Wasswa. Uganda beat Kenya 1-0 in the first match last Saturday. In an earlier match, Kenya's Harambee Stars redeemed their hopes of making it to the last eight with a 2-0 win over South Sudan, who became the first side to bow out of the tournament - they lost their first game 1-0 to Ethiopia. David Ochieng and Clifton Miheso netted in each half for Kenya, who will need a draw against Ethiopia to qualify for the knock-out stage. 'I am very happy with the attitude and we need to keep pushing hard," said Kenya coach James Nandwa. South Sudan coach Zoaran Djordjevic said that despite the loss, his boys had improved from the first match and he added that they are getting much-needed exposure. The winner of Wednesday's match between Tanzania and Burundi will automatically qualify for the knock-out stage. Somalia take on Sudan in Wednesday's other game. Source (CECAFA)

Ethiopian prime minister fires gov’t minister whose wife faces terror charges

Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn on Thursday fired the country’s civil minister, Junedin Sado, whose wife is one of 29 people facing terrorism charges related to protests by Muslims who accuse of the government of meddling in their religious affairs. Sado published a letter in the country’s independent newspapers in which he defended his wife and criticized the federal prosecutor’s charges. Also in Thursday’s Cabinet reshuffle, Hailemariam promoted two ministers to double as deputy prime ministers, giving the country three deputy prime ministers for the first time, a sign the ruling party is favoring collective leadership after the August death of its longtime leader Meles Zenawi. Tedros Adhanom was appointed as the country’s new foreign affairs minister. Source (Associated Press)

Sudan coup attempt foiled, says government spokesman

The Sudan government has arrested at least 14 high ranked army and security officials and several civilians connected to the ruling party of president Omar Al Bashir for an allegedly coupe attempt. Radio Dabanga reports on Thursday, 22 November, that tanks were roaming the Ebed Khatim-road south of the Kober-bridge in Khartoum where many top officers including the president and vice-president are residing. It is the first time that internal clashes within the ruling Islamic movements erupted to the surface. The movement sidetracked the leader of the Islamic movement, Ali Osman Taha, the vice-president of Sudan. He was replaced by Zubair Ahmed Hassan, a Minister of Economic Affairs. The government spokesman said in a public appearance today that the 'coup'-stagers took disadvantage from rumors about the 'health situation of President Omar Al Bashir'. Amongst the arrested people are retired major general Salah Abdalla Gosh (former security chief), general Adil Altayeb of the Sudan Armed Forces and Brigadier-general 'Wad' Mohamed Ibrahim. He was in charge to protect the oil fields in Kordofan (Heglig), but it failed after the Southern army walked in easily occupying the oil-wells preventing it from exploration. Only this week the first oil started to flow again. According to a security spokesperson for Radio Dabanga, the main suspects of the alleged coup were arrested Thursday morning at 01:00, other arrests followed before sunrise. The spokesman of the government, the minister of Information Ahmed Bilal Osman said that the authorities discovered the 'coup'-attempt 'a long time ago'. "They initially want to do it last Thursday, but they decided a week later. We arrested them to prevent bloodshed", Ahmed Bilal told the press. Radio Dabanga received information that besides the 13 people mentioned by the minister at least one other army officer had been arrested early today.  source ( All Africa)

Susan Rice, John Kerry seen as replacements for Hillary Clinton

It was reported on Nov. 9, 2012, according to latest updates, that it is believed that John Kerry or Susan Rice will replace Hillary Clinton after the recent elections held in America. Hillary Clinton is expected to step down from the post of Secretary of State. The two big names of John Kerry and Susan Rice are coming up as the most viable replacements for Clinton. However, seeing the vast experience of Hilton, nothing can be said for sure as of now. Rice, being of Jamaican heritage, is considered a nervy and uncompromising candidate. Her connections with Obama might prove beneficial for her. In the year 2004, Susan Rice held the post of then-Senator Obama’s foreign policy advisor. On the other hand, Kerry, the patrician chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, has topped on the list due to his experience and proximity to the President. The President may also consider the option of choosing a different eligible candidate.  Source (The Examiner)

An Eritrean man jailed for prostitute rape

The court heard Haile, who came to the UK from Eritrea in 2006, approached the prostitute at about 5.45am on March 2 last year and asked for business but she was not interested. He returned later and again approached her, brandishing £20. She accompanied him to an alley, then along North Road to a point where there was a gap in the fence. Haile then produced £10 which was not acceptable to the sex worker so she turned to walk away. But he grabbed her and pushed her to the ground. Prosecutor Peter Cooper said: "She struggled with him and shouted for help. "He subdued her by punching her. He then raped her. The woman continued struggling and screaming. "He tried to shut her up by putting his hand over her mouth to stifle her screams." After a few minutes, the defendant left. The prostitute went to a friend's house and called the police. She was dishevelled, with mud smeared on her cheek. She was examined by a police surgeon, swabs were taken and her clothes were sent away for forensic examination. The court heard Haile's DNA was found on the swabs and the clothing. He was arrested on May 31 and told police he had never had sex with a prostitute. Haile denied raping the woman, but told the jury she consented to sex. He said he did not tell the truth in his police interview because him having sex with a prostitute would reflect badly on him among the Eritrean community in Stoke-on-Trent. He said he is married and a follower of the Pentecostal faith, and having sex with a prostitute would not be considered acceptable in his community. But the jury returned a guilty verdict. The court heard Haile faced another allegation of raping another city prostitute but she did not turn up to give evidence. He was found not guilty of that offence after no evidence was offered by the Crown Prosecution Service. Judge Paul Glenn told Haile: "I am satisfied you targeted your victim. "You decided you were going to have sex with her and you weren't going to pay for it. You knew full well she was a prostitute. She was vulnerable."You forcibly detained her, made sure she was silent and you raped her."You used her to satisfy your lust."Time spent on remand – 252 days – will count towards Haile's sentence. He will be on the sex offenders' register indefinitely.  Source ( Staffordshire )

Iran wants to shield Sudan from further Israel attack

Two Iranian warships docked in Sudan on Monday, Iran's official IRNA news agency reported, less than a week after Khartoum accused Israel of attacking an arms factory in the Sudanese capital.
Two people were killed after fire broke out late on Tuesday at the Yarmouk arms factory in the south of Khartoum. Sudanese Information Minister Ahmed Belal Osman said four military planes attacked the Yarmouk plant and Israel was behind it.
Asked by Israel's Channel Two News about Sudan's accusations, Israeli Defence Minister Ehud Barak said: "There is nothing I can say about this subject." IRNA said the helicopter carrier Khark and the destroyer Shahid Naqdi were carrying: "the message of peace and friendship to neighbouring countries and were ensuring security for shipping lanes against marine terrorism and piracy". Iran's semi-official Fars news agency said that the vessels docked in Port Sudan on the Red Sea and the fleet's commanders were scheduled to meet Sudanese navy commanders. Sudan, with close ties to Iran and Sunni jihadis, has long been seen by Israel as a conduit for weapons smuggled to the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip, via the Egyptian Sinai desert. In May, Sudan's government said one person had been killed after a car exploded in the eastern city of Port Sudan. It said that explosion resembled a blast last year it had blamed on an Israeli missile strike. Israel declined to comment on the May incident or the 2011 blast, which killed two people. It also neither admitted nor denied involvement in a similar incident in eastern Sudan in 2009. Iran said in June it had plans to build more warships and increase its presence in international waters, particularly to protect its cargo ships around the world. Pirates in the Gulf of Aden in January hijacked an Iranian ship carrying 30,000 tonnes of petrochemical products to a North African country.  Source ( Reuters)

Who is Roman Tesfaye ?

We would like to share with you a little background on   the current Ethiopian first lady, Roman Tesafye . Lately there is a great rumor spreading about her parents and origin of birth. Here is an information we read from Tigrai on line on the PM wife.  As a remark we strongly believe that it really doesn’t matter where you born, or who your biological parents are, what matters is your deeds! Obama’s dad is originally from the small city of Kenya, maybe he is from Qukuiu tribe, his son however runs for the second term of presidency in the great country of US. ! It is certainly yourself to change the world around you.
Ethiopia Roman Tesfaye was born in a small town near Wolayta soddo called Gacheno from a Wolayta father and mother. She attended her primary education in Gacheno, and soddo Comprehensive High school. After completing her High school studies she went on to study at Addis Ababa University and graduated with her first degree in Economics. Roman Tesfaye also holds Second degree in economics from an Indian university and An American Institution in Leadership.

Adam Smith to Study Ethiopian Tax Revenue Potential for 10.7 million birr

UK consultants, Adam Smith International Ltd is to study Ethiopia’s potential to raise revenue from tax under contract to the Ethiopian Revenues and Custom’s Authority. The Consultant will conduct the study for 10.7 million birr according to the contract signed between the two parties last week. ERCA’s interest to engage a company to evaluate the potential tax revenue in the current economy initially attracted 16 companies. The  final shortlist consisted of six companies: included McKinsey & Co, KPMG of Netherlands, DFC &VNG partners, the local office of Ernst & Young, the India office of Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu Ltd as well as Adam Smith. Three companies, Deloite, Mckinsey and Adam Smith passed the technical evaluations and Adam Smith was awarded the contract because its 10.7 million birr proposal was significantly lower than the 26.5 million birr offered by Deloite and the 38 million birr offered by Mckinsey.  The bid offered by Adam Smith was also lower than the 15 million birr ERCA had been offered two years ago in a bid that was later on cancelled. The project will be funded by financing from the World Bank’s Public Sector Capacity Building Program.  It is expected that the study will be conducted at the national level including all city and regional administrations to identify the potential revenue from each tax category and possible gaps.  The study will correct any flaws in the tax system by establishing the taxable amount in the economy thus ensuring that there will be no over or under collection according to an expert with the tax authority.  It is expected that Adam Smith will complete the job in 12 months.  Source (

From Civil Engineer to Cab Driver

Negede Abebe and Mechal Chame sit in Abebe's cab in Georgetown, talking about how they came to the U.S., what they did before and how they became cabbies. Abebe received asylum, and Chame won a Visa lottery to get to America.  Abebe was an economist in Ethiopia, working on trade and business issues for the government and for an international organization. So when he got to the U.S., the first thing he did was look for jobs in his field.  "I tried a lot and couldn’t find any," he says, adding that it was incredibly frustrating. Because he couldn't get hired, he decided to go back to school. In 2008, he graduated with his MBA from Trinity University in Northeast D.C. "I started driving a cab because … after I graduated in 2008 with an MBA I couldn't find a job," he says.   Read  more...

An Ethiopian cab driver turns in quarter-million dollars left in car

A Las Vegas cab driver is being praised for turning over a quarter-million dollars found stuffed in a laptop case in the back seat of his taxi. Adam Woldemarim was cleaning out the back seat of his vehicle last month when he noticed something between the seats, the Las Vegas Journal-Review reported. Woldemarum discovered a black soft laptop case with $221,510 inside, according to the newspaper. The Ethiopian-born taxi driver, who knows only a little English, immediately called a friend who had driven the cab earlier that day and asked if the money belonged to him.  When he was told that it did not, Woldemarim notified authorities, who later determined that the cash belonged to a man who had won big at the Wynn and had accidentally left the money behind on his way to the airport. Authorities later called Woldemarim back to their office to meet the man, who has not been identified. He reportedly thanked the cab driver and handed him a $2,000 tip.Woldemarim's friend, however, said they were surprised that he was not given more for his good deed. "It would have been nice if my good friend got more money, but I think the most important thing here is that a lot of people think foreign cabdrivers like us abuse tourists or they long haul their customers or we're just here causing problems and we don't belong here," one friend, Alex "Baharu" Alebachew, told the newspaper. "They never see the good side to us, the honest side. If you can just print that, that would be nice," he said.  Source (Fox News)

Two High ranking air force captains flee the country

Eritrean Air force Captains, Yonas Woldeab and Mekonnen Debesai, have today asked political asylum in Saudi Arabia, after fleeing their base in the IAI 1125 VIP passenger. The two pilots flew the plane that belongs to the Force this morning and there is no immediate reaction regarding their flee by the government so far. Yonas was head and trainer of the Civil department of the air force, according to sources in Asmara. Captain Yonas and Captain Mekonnen were head and deputy. The fact that both were able to build trust among them and agree to take the decision to flee the country with one of the air force’s rare VIP aircraft shows that the dictatorial regime is loathed not only by the majority ordinary Eritreans, but by the ‘trusted’ senior officers as well. The same sources indicate that the two pilots were one of the few and among the last left in the Force who had been well trained and highly trusted in the two-decade old force. They were one of few distinguished pilots who were sent by the Government to several training programs including one in Florida. They had been assigned in flying President Issias Afwerki and high ranking army and party officials both domestically and in the region in all official and secret missions. At the same time, they had been among the few Eritrean Air Force pilots who were frequently assigned to the highly regarded gold mining site in Bisha. The sources also acknowledge that they have been discontent following the deaths of their two pilot colleagues who were killed after the plane they were flying crashed in Eritrea, last year. They blame the government for the deaths that administrative negligence and lack of routine maintenance was the main cause for the loss. In the past few years, several Eritrean air force pilots and personnel have defected weakening the young air force further.  Source (

Egypt denies deal with Sudan to strike Ethiopian dam

An Egyptian official has emphatically denied the veracity of allegations that his country had reached an agreement with neighboring Sudan to use its territories as a launch pad for potential attacks on Ethiopian damming facilities over the dispute of Nile water-sharing. Sudan Tribune reported the allegations last month citing a 2010 internal e-mail leaked by the whistle-blowing website Wikileaks, which suggested that Sudan president Omer Al-Bashir had agreed to build an Egyptian airbase in his country's western region of Darfur to be used for assaults on The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) should diplomatic efforts fail to resolve the dispute between Egypt and Ethiopia over Nile water-sharing.But Egypt's state minister for military production, Rida Hafiz, on Monday strongly denied the allegations saying they are "totally bare of truth" According to Egypt's state-run news agency MENA, Hafiz added that the report is "designed to disturb Egyptian-Ethiopian relations."Egypt - and Sudan to a lesser extent - are involved in a drawn-out conflict with the Nile Basin's upstream countries over Nile Water rights as the latter, mainly Ethiopia, continue to contest and attempt to alter the shares dictated by colonial-era treaties giving Egypt the lion share in Africa's longest river. The North African country is concerned that Ethiopia's GERD, a massive hydroelectric dam on the Blue Nile, about 40 kilometers from the borders with Sudan, will affect its vital flow of fresh water when completed with a capacity to create a reservoir of 65 billion cubic metres. President Omer Al-Bashir reportedly told his Egyptian counterpart Mohammed Morsi this month that Sudan shares "identical position" with Egypt on the Nile water issue. Source ( Sudan tribune)

Former Ethiopian president Mangiestu left Harare; say sources

Sources told Radio VOP on Tuesday that Menguistu quietly Ieft Harare to settle in the Vumba area almost a year ago. He lives a lavish but reclusive life in Zimbabwe amid fears over his safety. The former Marxist ruler fled his motherland in the early 1990’s after a then rebel group led by late Meles Zenawi overrun his Red Army. Mengistu was tried and found guilty of genocide in absentia and was sentenced to life in prison in January 2007. But Harare where he received sanctuary due to friendship with President Robert Mugabe, said it would not extradite him. He was initially staying in GunHill, a low density suburb for rich Zimbabweans in the capital Harare, but there was an attempt at his life. Some armed Eritreans sneaked into Zimbabwe and trekked him to GunHill where they shot at him but he escapsed unhurt. His attackers were arrested and given lengthy jail terms. Sources said Mengistu was now staying in the Vumba area, a popular tourist spot with his family. They said he is under tight protection although he often frequents upmarket restaurants in the Vumba area such as Genaina. Zimbabwean authorities have largely shielded him from the media since his arrival in May 1991.In the very few interviews he has given Zimbabwean media Mengistu said he had no regrets about his rule and that he tried his best for Ethiopia. - Radio VOP. Ethiopia's Meseret Defar takes gold in the women's 5000 metres

ETHIOPIA'S Meseret Defar deprived her teammate and arch-rival Tirunesh Dibaba an Olympic double for a second time when she produced a home-stretch sprint to claim victory in the 5000m. Defar, who also won the 5000m at the Athens Games in 2004, timed a relatively slow 15min 04.25sec, with world champion Vivian Cheruiyot of Kenya claiming silver in 15:04.73.  Defending Olympic champion and newly-crowned 10,000m gold medallist Dibaba, considered the greatest female distance runner of all-time with three Olympic titles and four world crowns, took bronze in 15:05.15. Britain's Joanne Pavey took up the early running in the 12-and-a-half lap race, Dibaba content to sit quietly on the inside lane. Italian Elena Romagnolo led the bunched peloton through the 2km mark in 6:17.35. Cheruiyot and her teammates Sally Kipyego and Viola Kibiwot sat at the back of the pack as Dibaba took to the front with four laps remaining. Defar followed, with Kibiwot leading the trio of Kenyans through to the front as the pace finally upped towards 65sec laps. With 800m to go, Dibaba tested the waters with another surge that saw the main contenders cut to the six east African rivals. As the bell rang for the final lap, Dibaba looked up at the screen to see where the field lay and approaching the final bend, there were still six runners in it. Defar waited on Dibaba's shoulder and pounced as her teammate, looking for her trademark turn of speed for the line, came up empty. Cheruiyot, who is also reigning world 10,000m champion, then passed Dibaba in the final few metres.  Source ( AFP)

Booth attendants charged in Smithsonian parking fee thefts

Three booth attendants have been charged in connection with thefts at the parking garage of the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum annex. The three attendants were arrested by the FBI and Smithsonian security agents Saturday as their shifts ended. The U.S Attorney's office said at least $400,000 had been stolen over three years. Federal prosecutors said closed circuit television cameras showed parking attendants repeatedly unplugging electronic vehicle counters, which allowed as much as $4,000 to be stolen in a day. One parking attendant is seen stuffing wads of cash into a duffel bag, officials said.
The parking garage at the Smithsonian annex, known as the Udvar-Hazy Center, charges drivers $15 daily, with most of the proceeds intended to go to the museum. The annex, located near Dulles Airport, is home to the space shuttle Discovery and a large display of other historic aircraft.
Those arrested were Freweyni Mebrathu, 45, of Sterling, Virginia; Genete Yigzu, 46, of Alexandria, Virginia; and Meseret Terefe, 36, of Silver Spring, Maryland. All three were employees of Parking Management Inc. The U.S. Attorney's office said the three are charged with embezzling and stealing federal monies belonging to the Smithsonian. Each faces up to ten years in prison.  Source ( CNN)

Tiki Galena of Ethiopia wins women's marathon in Olympic-record time

Through 33 turns, past Big Ben and the Tower of London and enough other historical attractions to fill a guidebook, Tiki Gelana of Ethiopia never relented, running through a downpour at the start and a drizzle toward the end, capturing the gold medal in the women’s marathon in an Olympic-record time of two hours, 23 minutes, seven seconds on Sunday. The 5-5, 106-pound Gelana, niece of the 2000 Olympic marathon winner, Gezhagne Abera, and the winner this year at Rotterdam , broke away from Kenya’s Priscah Jeptoo with just over a half-mile to go, and then held off a final late counter-surge by Jeptoo not even a water stop from Buckingham Palace. The race did not include world record-holder and British icon Paula Radcliffe, who is injured, but that was of no issue to the 24-year-old Gelana, who prevailed in the closest Olympic marathon ever.
Jeptoo’s silver medal time was 2:23:12. Tatyana Petrova of Russia was a surprise bronze medalist, bettering her personal-record time by almost 90 seconds with Through a finish of 2:23:29. Well beyond the halfway point, a lead pack of more than 20 were clustered, among them Americans Shalane Flanagan and Kara Goucher. But Gelana, who ran the second half in under one hour and 10 minutes, and Kenyans Jeptoo, Mary Keitany and Edna Kiplagat broke away, and Petrova joined them. Flanagan, the bronze medalist at 10,000 meters in Beijing, wound up 10th, crossing in 2:25:51. Goucher clocked 2:26:07 and placed 11th. We all have perceived boundaries about what we are capable of,” Flanagan said. “I am capable of better.”   The third American in the field, Desiree Davila, withdrew after two miles with a hip ailment. A brilliant run, says BBC

"Ethiopia has every reason to celebrate. She becomes the seventh athlete from the country to win three individual gold medals. It was a fantastic performance, a brilliant run. You know what? She might have another in a few days time. This is the great Tirunesh Dibaba."

On her fourth Olympics Pavey, 38, beat her previous best by 19.10 seconds, as Bleasdale improved by 33.96 seconds.  Dibaba's triumph was her third Olympic gold after winning both the 5,000m and 10,000m in Beijing - the first female athlete to do so.  Leading with 500m to go, 26-year-old Dibaba broke away from Kenya's Sally Kipyego and Vivian Cheruiyot to win in 30 minutes 20.76 seconds.  And she could match that triumph, as she plans to run again in the shorter distance in London in the final on Friday, 10 August.  After a steady first 4,000m where the pace was 74 seconds per lap, Kipyego began to drag out the race around the halfway mark.  Ethiopia's Werknesh Kidane took it on another gear around 7,600m as the leading runners slimmed down to just four with team-mate Dibaba behind Cheruiyot and Kipyego.  With three laps to go Kipyego found the front as Kidane slipped back, but it mattered little as Dibaba tore down the finishing straight for the penultimate time.  In front of a noisy crowd clearly enjoying the first day of athletics in the Olympic Stadium, the Ethiopian runner established a 30m lead down the back straight.  And she extended it further as she completed a final lap of 62 seconds to give her opposition no chance of stripping her of her crown.   Source (BBC)

The 39 years old Ethiopian Legend regrets not to be competing at the London Olympic.

Ethiopian running legend Haile Gebrselassie admitted Sunday that it was “painful” not to be competing at the London Olympics, but held out hope he could make the Rio Games in four years’ time.
Gebrselassie, a two-time Olympic and four-time world 10,000m champion, failed to progress from an Ethiopian qualifying trial in Hengelo in May and was omitted from his country’s team. To add to his woes, the 39-year-old had already also failed to post a qualifying time for the marathon in what would have been his fifth Olympics.
“It’s very painful not to be running here after all I have achieved,” Gebrselassie said.
“The only thing I don’t like here in London is that I’m not running here. I’m sorry for that.”
He added: “Hopefully I’ll be running for the next four years and you’ll see me in Brazil. Why not?!”
Gebrselassie backed compatriot and former teammate Kenenisa Bekele to
win the 10,000m from a clutch of Kenyan rivals and British hope Mo Farah.
“I say Bekele for the 10K,” he said, warning that Bekele would prefer a fast pace.
“The 10,000m depends on the pace. If the pace is slow, you could say Mo Farah.”
Kenyan Wilson Kipsang, winner of this year’s
London marathon, got his nod as gold medal favourite in the 42.195km-long ra

Ethiopia freezes travel by citizens to the UAE for jobs

Ethiopia has decided that no citizens should go to the UAE for until agreement can be reached to protect their rights. The Ethiopian Consul-General in Dubai, Mesganu Arga Moach, said the freeze was a temporary move aimed at rooting out unscrupulous recruiters and putting an end to abuses. He said the freeze had been imposed because of the number of recruitment agencies working illegally.

Ethiopia wanted “an agreement with the UAE that ensures our nationals' rights.” The Consul-General said his office received “five to ten complaints a day from our citizens of abuse, unpaid salaries and people being beaten." Under Ethiopian law sponsors are required to provide medical insurance and undertake to pay a minimum monthly wage of Dh660. All contracts have to be sent to the Labour ministry in Addis Ababa, which provides workers with an ID card to work overseas. Mr. Mesganu said "We have excellent relations with the UAE Government but the problem is with the agencies. They do not cooperate with the consulate. So we want to put in proper controls on the Ethiopian side." Mr. Mesganu said the Government of Ethiopia would consider increasing the minimum wage and adding a clause for compulsory annual tickets home. A number of agencies in Ethiopia have been suspended and some have already been banned.

The UAE Ambassador to Ethiopia, Dr Yousif Eisa Hassan Alsabri, welcomed the ban as a move designed to “to regulate and safeguard people. It is good for the UAE and for Ethiopia.” He said his Embassy was also studying the matter and would send a report to the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who would decide what action to take. An estimated 100,000 Ethiopians live in the UAE but only one agency is known to be legally recruiting Ethiopian workers. The UAE Ambassador urged existing sponsors and companies to authenticate Ethiopian employee contracts at the Dubai consulate, the only Ethiopian mission in the UAE. –(MFA)
